DAY 06: SRINAGAR – WULAR LAKE (60 KMS FROM SRINAGAR)– WATLAB (5 KMS FROM LAKE) – SRINAGAR
After breakfast today, get ready for an excursion to one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes – Wular Lake. The basin of Wular was created as a result of ancient tectonic activity. Wular Lake is fed by the waters of River Jhelum and varies in size from 30 to 260 sq km (12 to 100 square miles), according to the changing seasons. The beguiling beauty of Wular Lake is hard to describe. Wular Lake is also visited by the waters of mountain streams Madmati, Erin and Bohnar. Placid for most of the year, the lake is often flooded with melting snow and large volumes of water draining in from Pohru stream. They say that the lake changes character with every few miles. Gradually, as you start to move ahead from the well-traversed areas of the valley, you will experience Kashmir like never before as Watlab starts to unfold before you. Watlab is also famous for its hilltop Musim shrine. From here, Wular Lake stretches for as far as the eye can see, defined by picturesque villages amid terraced breeze-rippled fields of paddy, in what has been described as a riotous burst of colour. There is also a forest rest house in the sprawling apple orchards in Watlab. You could take a minute to stop here just to enjoy the sheer grandeur of Kashmir’s spectacular countryside. After experiencing this facet of the Kashmir, head back to Srinagar before sunset. Overnight stay at your hotel/houseboat in Srinagar.
